The Mediterranean Thoracic Society (MTS) was founded as an effective instrument to consolidate and develop co-operation in Mediterranean countries and to facilitate the flow of medical and scientific knowledge among member countries, particularly in the applied sciences.

Knowledge and wisdom, the fundaments of science, know no barriers or boundaries. An open, dynamic vision of the world is intrinsic to their development, independently of national identities and in a climate of interrelation.

This mental approach is a precept of the Mediterranean Thoracic Society and the reason it has decided to realise the concept of international collaboration as a historical and scientific necessity with the First International Conference of the MTS at Taormina in April 2003. The event won't celebrate the inception of a new Scientific Society, but embody a need expressed by representatives of a "culture" in which human beings have the potential to reinvent themselves for themselves, for future generations, and for the world that surrounds them.
